MiLee Vogel – City of Sycamore
Time sure flies when you are having the time of your life! Today was County Government day in the mythical land of Arizona Girls State.
The first high point was a presentation on the history of the American Legion Poppy, which represents men and women who have died in service to bring freedom to our great country. In the mail with our Girls State information, we received a poppy making kit and the presenter guided us on its simplistic construction.
Our next order of business was meeting in breakout rooms with our assigned counties. Supai, Cocopah, and Kaibab are the counties represented this year. Kaibab county, which I was placed in, consisted of the cities Saguaro and Sycamore. Our major focus was the appointment of a County Sheriff, Attorney, Recorder, Treasurer, Assessor, SuperIntendent of Schools, Superior Court Judge, Justice of the Peace, and two individuals for the Board of Supervisors. I was honored to be appointed as the County Sheriff.
Next, we moved onto discussing our counties ideals and improvement projects. We zeroed in on the areas of increased funding for healthcare, schools, and environmental improvement of our national parks, as well as increased help with our citizens mental health and access for the youth to internship programs for jobs in the workforce.
An important note to add is due to this year’s virtual program, delegates are allowed to run for more than one position, opening doorways for girls to hold multiple offices.
Time quickly ran short and the program switched over to our individual city meetings. Sycamore’s city advisor unfortunately had technical issues for most of the meeting, so our diligent and proactive Mayor took charge. Our ending session covered reviewing and editing our city themes, passing ordinances, and selecting our candidates that will run for governor and secretary of state. The Ordinance proposed was to make our schools and parks smoke free zones in order to protect our cities children.
An amusing theme proposal centered around our city as cheese themed with a cheese amusement park and to have cheese as our main product/income source.
Before we knew it, our time was up, and day three of Girls State came to a close. Day 4 will bring the excitement of the state government and exploration of our legislative branch. Once again, this is MiLee Vogel, signing off…
