Nicolle Conlogue – City of Manzanita

Girls State was lively and bustling from all three of our meetings today! The other three cities that weren’t introduced yesterday, introduced themselves today which allowed all the girls to get to know each other’s names as well as where they go to high school. “Yack-Yacks” were introduced between transitions of introductions just like yesterday. Jokes and trivia regarding Arizona were also introduced.

The group also watched a short video of the importance and symbolism of the poppy flower and how to make ones out of tissue paper. The poppy became the official flower of the American Legion on September 27, 1920 to memorialize the fallen soldiers who fought in the war. Oddly enough, the 19th Amendment, which allowed women to vote, was ratified in the United States a month earlier. Below are just a few of the amazing poppies that were created today:

County meetings were held today as well as the election of county government roles: which had the same election process as city government. I was lucky enough to guess the number for the Superior Court Judge for our county, Cocopah. Other county positions included board of supervisors, county sheriff, county attorney, and more.

From Manzanita, the candidate for secretary of state is Ms. Mata and I’m the candidate for Governor. Formal elections based on votes will be held tomorrow (Wednesday June 24, 2020) in order to select which candidates from the counties will run for secretary of state.   There are two cities that Cocopah consists of, Manzanita and Ocotillo. The two cities worked incredibly well together and discussed what our county seal would be. Citizens brought out-of-the-box ideas that were so creative, and I can’t wait to see the end result sometime this week.
