Arshiya Alwadi – Manzanita City
Hello from Manzanita! It was a day full of new ideas and information!
This morning started with the Palo Verde, Saguaro, and Sycamore citizens introducing themselves. It was a pleasure to (virtually) meet everyone. After hearing from each girl about why they joined Girls State, I feel that all of them are SUPERWOMEN, who have and will accomplish great things for our country. Then after the Girls State team shared information about the vast alumni network and upcoming oratorical competitions, we learned about the significance of the poppy flower and National Poppy Day. As we handmade our red crepe paper poppies, I was touched to learn that the ALA Poppy Program was created to honor the sacrifices made by our veterans.
Today, the citizens of Manzanita met with the citizens of Ocotillo to discuss the plan for our county- Cocopah county. We first held nominations for the county and state positions. I am so proud of my city’s representation in the elections and everyone’s involvement in filling the slate. Then the 35 of us began planning our county book and seal. So many unique ideas were brought up for our seal, resulting in a blend of each city’s theme. We combined Manzanita’s apple frame seal (to honor the Spanish-English translation of “manzanita” to “little apple”) with Ocotillo’s galaxy and ocotillo plant theme. As everyone shared their thoughts and opinions, I felt so grateful to be a part of a program that fosters so much participation and motivation to make a difference.
And now for an Arizona fun fact until I see you tomorrow: Across the state, we can see sunny skies 300 days of the year!
