Rachel Lemons – Cholla City
Today’s date is Monday, June 7, 2021. It is the second day of Girls State and the women of Cholla are excited to get to work. After an enlightening morning of meeting other brave and determined girls, we were later split up into our designated cities.
Today’s meeting was full of rich conversation as well as future planning for our city. Ideas about national parks, revenue, and community building were thrown around. This allows for members of our city to flourish as well as have a strong bond with community members. The City of Cholla will be known as one dedicated to helping the environment as well as including the public in natural discovery. Ideas such as public transportation, accessibility for disabled, and engaging young children in scientific discovery foreshadows a terrifically built city.
Elections for both councilwoman and mayor took place today. This began with a preliminary vote and led to a finalized vote securing our fearless leaders. Each candidate gave a minute long speech on why they believe they are the best for the position they desired. Afterwards we were assigned various roles to help our city grow.
The day ended with 16 tired girls who have worked to build the city of their dreams. With our amazing leaders selected, the hard work yet to come was given a strong foundation. The work has merely begun, but exciting things are coming in the future.
